ABOUT THIS PAINTING
This portrait painting of a woman, sitting outdoors in a garden chair, was painted in the end of summer 2019. I chose to paint a portrait outdoors, in an attempt to renew with and revisit the English Eighteenth-century tradition of portraits set in landscapes. The landscape setting, only briefly suggested, opens up the picture visually but also virtually to various interpretations. Accordingly, the sitter’s spontaneous expression also interrogates and encourages active interpretation.

In addition to likeness, my portrait also aims to convey the corporal presence of the sitter. Comfortably nested in her seat, with her arms around her legs, the model’s pose and the dramatic afternoon light draws attention to the body and its tangible physical presence. Moreover, the chair itself and its nuances of reflexive light becomes a character of its own, embracing and showcasing the sitter. Finally, as one of my most loyal and recurrent models along the years, the sitter stands for more than simply a relative. She represents the assiduous work of the portrait painter, relentlessly painting his entourage, in persistent search of likeness and expressivity.

ABOUT ME:
Carole Nataf is an experienced London-based artist who was born in France. She has been exhibited in galleries in the U.S., Paris and London and her work is represented in dozens of private collections and publications. She holds degrees in Philosophy from La Sorbonne (B.A.) and History of Art (M.A.) from the Courtauld Institute.

While studying art privately in Paris, NYC, San Francisco and Boston, she was naturally drawn to painting outdoors and from life, immersed in the heart of her subjects. Influenced by the French impressionists and inspired by contemporary culture, the world she depicts is soft and colorful.

Carole’s more recent work explores contemporary visual culture and the effects of social media, iphone photography and digital culture on representation. Adopting high exposure, saturated colors and distorted angles, her recent portraits express the ambiguity of self-presentation in the digital age.
